A press conference benefiting Honduran sports turned political and violent on Friday. The country's vice president, Salvador Nasralla, was giving a speech about the conditions of the stadium when several members of a rival political party that Salvador Nasralla himself joined in the elections to help them come to power stormed the conference and began attacking throwing rocks, water bottles and hitting bats. The vice president's bodyguards responded by evacuating the vice president immediately after the conference, prompting more aggression from the crowd as the vice president ran toward his car. Three people were injured in the melee, including two journalists. The vice president finally escaped to his car and was taken away.

This is just another example of how divided Honduras is politically; the country has been plagued by violence and unrest since a military coup in 2009. Sport is one of the few things that brings people together in Honduras, and that this happens is a shame.

But many have said that this has been something waiting to happen. Just a few months ago the attention of local authorities and government officials was brought to the attention of stadium conditions and the continued use of sports facilities for concerts and festivals. READ HERE:

The conditions of the fields and the lighting (or lack of it) in the national stadiums were raised with the local government and sports federations. Currently the LEMPIRA REINA hosts night games with less than 46% of the available lighting system working.

The Francisco Morazán Stadium is home to Real Sociedad, one of the most popular soccer teams in Tegucigalpa. The stadium only has 12 of a possible 38 floodlights in operation.

This not only affects football games, but also baseball games that are played at night. This puts players and fans in danger, not to mention affects the quality of the game.

Many have called for a change in the way sports are run in Honduras, with some even calling for a new ministry dedicated to sports. But with the current political situation in Honduras, it seems unlikely that anything will change any time soon.

And still nothing has been done to improve conditions and the Honduran government is blind and deaf to the needs of the athletes as local athletes continue to play in the dark.

This is a refined example of how political conditions in Honduras are so volatile that even a simple sports press conference can turn into a dangerous and violent situation. It's a shame this country can't seem to catch a breath.

And this last KAROL G concert at the HECTOR SOSA Stadium in Tegucigalpa left the stadium in worse conditions.

The grass was dead, there were large puddles of water everywhere, and the alarmingly small number of working lights (4 out of a possible 38) made it look like a scene from a horror movie.

"The stadium is unusable, and only receives permanent complaints," said Vice President Salvador Nasralla.

"Not just the pitch, but the lights in this stadium." Carlos Cordero said. "Only 45% of the lights work."

This is simply unacceptable and something needs to be done about it, but with the current state of things in Honduras, it doesn't seem likely that anything will change anytime soon.

“We congratulate the officials and dignitaries who tried to get together today and schedule the press conference. That was a step forward. But what happened at the press conference took the sport in Honduras back two steps…maybe more.” Said ISPS Commissioner Manuel T. Ferrero III.

“Listen, we will always support freedom of expression, the right to protest and express your opinions. But when we take that step toward violence, that's where all progress is lost. What happened today at the press conference with the stones and the throwing of bottles and hitting just can't happen. This is what is killing our (slow pitch) sport globally!" Commissioner Ferrero said.

And after the violence displayed at today's press conference, it seems that Honduran Sport took some leaps backwards instead of forwards.

Y tras la violencia desplegada en la conferencia de prensa de hoy, parece que el deporte hondureño dio algunos saltos hacia atrás en lugar de hacia adelante.
