Playing Barefoot with the Amazonas of Yaxunah

A Journey to the Heart of Yaxunah: A Day with the Amazonas

It was a humid morning in Mérida, Yucatán, when I embarked on a journey that would etch unforgettable memories into my heart. At 8 AM sharp, the sun barely peeking over the horizon, our day began at the exquisite Camino Real Hotel. This trip was not just another visit; it was a return to the Yucatán, a place rich in history and culture, where ancient ruins and cenotes whisper tales of the past. The experience that awaited us would be more profound than any before.

Departing CAMINO REAL Hotel And Begin The Journey

Accompanying me were Imelda Salazar from Yucatán Meetings, Adriana Sunza Boulloy from Mexican Meetings, Fernanda Marin Vera from Yucatán Meetings, and our reliable chauffeur Joel. This team, each bringing their unique expertise, was integral to our mission – to reconnect with the Amazonas from Yaxunah, a journey postponed from our previous trip due to unpredictable weather.

Our destination, the remote village of Yaxunah, was roughly a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Mérida. The last stop before venturing into the wilderness was Piste, the final village with cellphone service. This pitstop allowed us to alert our hosts of our imminent arrival. The road ahead was one of anticipation and excitement.

As we journeyed through the lush landscapes of the Yucatán Peninsula, memories of our previous visit resurfaced. The ancient Mayan ruins, the mystical cenotes, and the vibrant culture of the region had left an indelible mark on our hearts. Yet, this trip promised something different – a chance to meet the Amazonas, an all-female softball team from Yaxunah, and witness their unique way of embracing the sport.

Entering Yaxunah felt like stepping back in time. The village, untouched by most modern amenities such as cellphone service, is a main-road settlement adorned with some houses that sport palm branch roofs. The simplicity and humility of the place were deeply moving. It was here that we were greeted by Nayeli Unicab Canul, the manager of the Amazonas softball team. Riding on a small motorcycle, she led us to the field where the team awaited our arrival.

Sharing Stories, Ideas, and Gifts with the Amazonas

The welcome was warm and spirited. We gathered in a large circle – representatives from both sides, exchanging stories and laughter. It was a humbling experience to be part of this community, if only for a day. We had come bearing gifts from ISPS, the ISPS USA Slow Pitch Softball Shenandoah Women’s Slow Pitch League, and BAMMTANK. The donations included new and used bats, gloves, balls, and more, sparking joy and gratitude among the Amazonas.

The highlight of our visit was the impromptu game of softball. Dividing into teams, we played a quick two-inning match before the afternoon rains set in. One unique tradition of the Amazonas is playing barefoot and in their traditional dresses. Inspired by their practice, I too decided to shed my shoes and socks, immersing myself fully in the experience. Playing barefoot on a diamond was surreal. It brought a new level of connection and respect for these athletes who compete with such grace and resilience, despite the challenging terrain.

Every step was a reminder of their strength and dedication. The game itself was a testament to their skills and passion. Despite the simplicity of their equipment and field, the Amazonas played with a fervor that could rival any well-equipped team. My own performance, though lackluster with two ground-outs, was secondary to the joy of playing alongside these incredible women.

Post-game, we were treated to a sumptuous traditional Yucatán meal, served on a long, beautifully set table steps away from the jungle. The food, rich in flavor and tradition, was a perfect complement to the day's events. It was a moment to reflect, to appreciate the simple yet profound connections forged through sport and shared experiences.

The universe responded through the quiet presence of a small girl who approached me, sharing stories of her family and her dreams.

After lunch, I took a moment to meditate on the field, seeking guidance on how best to support the Amazonas. It was a poignant reminder that our mission was about more than just donations; it was about building relationships and understanding the needs and aspirations of this community.

As the rain began to fall, we hurriedly packed up and offered the team a ride back to their home. There, we had the opportunity to purchase handmade souvenirs, each crafted with care by the Amazonas to raise funds and awareness for their team. These items, more than just keepsakes, symbolized the spirit and perseverance of the women who made them.

We spent more time discussing their dreams and how we could support them in realizing those dreams. It was clear that our partnership had the potential to bring about significant positive change. The drive back to Mérida, though long, was filled with reflections on the day’s events and the promise of future collaborations.

This journey to Yaxunah was more than just a visit; it was a reaffirmation of our commitment to the slow-pitch softball community. The Amazonas, with their indomitable spirit, reminded us of the true essence of sport – not just competition, but connection, support, and shared joy.

For those moved by this story and eager to contribute, I urge you to reach out to our offices. Your support can make a world of difference to the Amazonas and many other teams like them.
