Brickell Breeze Capture the 2024 City of Miami Mayor's Cup – Women's Division Champions in Historic Tournament

The 12th Annual City of Miami Invitational Mayor's Cup wasn’t just another slow-pitch tournament—it was a landmark event in Miami’s sporting history. This year marked the debut of the Women's Division, and what an entrance it made! With teams ready to showcase their skills, the competition featured a special highlight: the Lobos Femenil from Guatemala City, the first international women’s team to participate in the Mayor's Cup. Sponsored by Mayor Francis Suarez, this groundbreaking tournament ended in an epic showdown, where the undefeated Brickell Breeze took home the inaugural Women’s Division title.

Set against the vibrant energy of Shenandoah Park, this year’s competition was destined for greatness. Brickell Breeze brought local dominance, while Lobos Femenil made history by traveling all the way from Guatemala City to compete. Fans and players alike were eager to see how these teams would fare on Miami soil. Despite an unfortunate turn of events with heavy rain forcing the cancellation of the final games, the tournament's structure and performance tallies ensured a rightful champion was crowned—and it was none other than Brickell Breeze.

Brickell Breeze: The First Women's Division Champions Brickell Breeze, a Miami-based powerhouse, entered the tournament with a mission to claim the first-ever Women's Division title. And they did it in spectacular fashion. They kicked off their run with a commanding 19-5 win over the Sparkly Legends, making an early statement about their intentions. The momentum carried into their second game, where they faced Lobos Femenil in a much-anticipated match. Brickell Breeze dominated again, winning 18-5 and finishing the tournament undefeated with a perfect 2-0 record and an outstanding +27 run differential.

ISPS Commissioner Manuel T. Ferrero III couldn’t have been prouder. “This is the beginning of something special for women’s slow-pitch softball. Brickell Breeze showed incredible teamwork, determination, and class on the field. The debut of the Women’s Division at the Mayor’s Cup has been nothing short of historic, and ISPS is proud to have been a part of it.”

Lobos Femenil: International Trailblazers from Guatemala City The story of Lobos Femenil goes beyond their fierce play on the field. Traveling over 1,100 miles from Guatemala City to Miami, they became the first international women’s team to ever participate in the Mayor’s Cup. Their commitment to the sport and their pioneering spirit made them an inspiration to everyone in the tournament.

In their first game, Lobos Femenil bested the Barracuda Gators 15-7, displaying grit and talent that put them on everyone’s radar. Though they faced a tough loss to Brickell Breeze in their second game, they earned their spot as the tournament's finalists. Their journey to Miami and their incredible performance on the field have paved the way for more international teams to join future competitions.

Despite the rain that ultimately canceled the final games, Lobos Femenil's place in the Mayor's Cup history is solidified. They not only represented Guatemala but also opened the door for future international participation in Miami’s slow-pitch scene.

An Unfortunate End, but a Fitting Conclusion The rain may have stopped the action before the tournament could fully conclude, but the games that were played were more than enough to crown a champion. With a 2-0 record and the best run differential, Brickell Breeze was rightfully awarded the trophy as the first-ever Women’s Division champions. Lobos Femenil, with their trailblazing journey and competitive spirit, claimed a well-deserved second place.

While the final matchups between Brickell Breeze and Barracuda Gators, as well as Lobos Femenil against Sparkly Legends, went unplayed due to heavy rain and flooding, the standings were tallied fairly based on the teams’ performances throughout the tournament.

At ISPS, we celebrate this historic year and the incredible athletes who made it possible. "This Women’s Division is just the beginning," said Ferrero. "We are thrilled to welcome international teams and see the sport grow in ways we’ve always dreamed about. Lobos Femenil’s participation shows how softball connects us all, no matter where we’re from."

The Future of Women’s Slow-Pitch Is Bright This inaugural Women’s Division has set a new standard for what’s to come.
