Miami Mermaids Conquer Puerto Rico at the 2024 Boricua Open Championships

The Miami Mermaids arrived in Puerto Rico ready to compete in the 2024 Boricua Open Championships Women's Division, but weather and unforeseen circumstances had other plans. Though their games were canceled due to conditions out of their control, the Mermaids didn’t let that stop them from turning their trip into an adventure of a lifetime. What began as a journey for competition became an experience of exploration, team bonding, and unforgettable memories.

Instead of playing on the field, the Mermaids made the most of their time on the island by embracing Puerto Rico’s vibrant culture. They trekked through the lush trails of El Yunque Rainforest, explored the historic charm of Old San Juan, and partied the night away at the energetic La Placita de Santurce. Through every experience, the Mermaids built connections that will last far beyond this trip.

“We are bonded forever,” said Joseling Escobar, reflecting on the trip. This experience wasn’t just about softball; it was about coming together as a team and building lifelong friendships.

Melissa "PECHUGA" Torres shared similar sentiments, saying, “This trip was incredible. Even though we didn’t get to play, it showed how much we enjoy traveling. I can’t wait for future trips around the world with this team.”

While the games may have been called off, the Mermaids used this time to grow stronger as a unit. They demonstrated resilience and an ability to turn challenges into opportunities for personal and team growth.

ISPS Commissioner Manuel T. Ferrero III expressed his pride in the team’s adaptability: “What stood out to me about the Mermaids was their positivity and teamwork in the face of adversity. They made the best of the situation and turned it into a special bonding experience. This is what ISPS is all about—creating opportunities for athletes to build connections, on and off the field.”

A Special Thanks to Our Sponsors

The Miami Mermaids’ trip wouldn’t have been possible without the support of their generous sponsors. A huge thank you goes out to Discover Puerto Rico, Casa Bacardí, and Bacardí for making this adventure possible.

Thanks to their support, the Mermaids had the opportunity to not only experience Puerto Rico’s stunning landscapes and vibrant culture but also grow as a team.

Looking Ahead

While the 2024 Boricua Open Championships Women's Division didn’t go as planned on the field, the Miami Mermaids are already looking forward to next year’s tournament with anticipation and excitement. The team plans to return stronger and ready to compete.

Until then, the bonds formed during this unforgettable journey will keep the team close as they continue their softball journey together.
