Historic 2024 Boricua Open Championships: Miami Mermaids and Team Milwaukee Claim Top Honors!

The 2024 Boricua Open Championships delivered an unforgettable weekend of slow-pitch softball, as teams from across the globe converged in beautiful Puerto Rico for an intense battle on the diamond. Amid challenging weather and unexpected venue changes, the event showcased the best of competition, camaraderie, and celebration of the slow-pitch softball community.

This year’s tournament ended with two deserving champions, each receiving stunning custom-designed rings that will serve as lasting memories of their accomplishment. Both the Miami Mermaids in the Women's Division and Team Milwaukee in the Men's Division have etched their names into Boricua Open history, solidifying their legacies with hard-fought victories.

Miami Mermaids Shine Bright in the Women's Division

The Miami Mermaids emerged victorious in the Women’s Division, showing poise, power, and unparalleled teamwork throughout the tournament. Despite a weekend filled with weather-related and other interruptions, the Mermaids kept their focus and made the best of their trip to the island, ultimately seizing the championship title. This experience adds to the team’s growing legacy and cements their place as one of the premier women’s teams in the Boricua Open.

The Women’s Champion Ring design pays homage to the Mermaids' triumph with intricate details, including their team logo and elements that reflect Puerto Rico’s cultural pride, such as the Boricua flag. The ring is a testament to their commitment and relentless spirit, adorned with sparkling stones that represent the hard-earned glory of this year’s tournament.

ISPS Commissioner Manuel T. Ferrero III praised the Mermaids’ performance:
“The Miami Mermaids showed us what it means to be true team. They handled the adversity of the weekend with grace when it counted the most. These rings are a reflection of their dedication and the spirit of slow-pitch softball.”

Team Milwaukee Dethrones the Three-Time Champions in the Men's Division

In the Men's Division, Team Milwaukee pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Boricua Open history by defeating the three-time defending champions, Most Wanted, in a thrilling final match. Their path to victory was not without challenges, as the heavy rains on Saturday forced the tournament to halt. On Sunday, the original venue, Perucho Stadium in Cataño, was deemed unplayable due to flooding. The tournament’s swift move to Levittown, Puerto Rico showcased the adaptability and perseverance of the organizers, teams, and fans.

With resilience and determination, Team Milwaukee brought their A-game and clinched the title in spectacular fashion, proving that they are a force to be reckoned with in the men’s slow-pitch softball scene.

Their championship ring design reflects this monumental achievement, with a bold Team Milwaukee logo at its center, surrounded by dazzling details that honor their journey and Puerto Rico’s heritage. The ring is a symbol of their victory and a reminder of the grit and effort that went into their championship win.

Mariel Escobar, ISPS Guatemala National Director, shared her excitement about the event and the new champions:
“Both the Miami Mermaids and Team Milwaukee showed us what true champions are made of. It was a weekend full of challenges, but the way they stepped up was remarkable. Congratulations to them and to everyone who participated in making this a truly memorable tournament.”
