ISPS Launches the First-Ever Puerto Rico Men’s Slow Pitch Softball League After Boricua Open Success

The International Slow Pitch Softball (ISPS) organization is thrilled to announce the launch of the first-ever ISPS Puerto Rico Men’s Slow Pitch Softball League, set to kick off in January 2024. Following the remarkable success of the recent Boricua Open Championships, this league is a milestone for ISPS and a testament to the growth and enthusiasm for slow-pitch softball in Puerto Rico.

This initiative wouldn’t have been possible without the tireless efforts of team managers and local players, particularly Kelvin Diaz from Team Milwaukee. Diaz, whose team recently clinched victory in the Boricua Open by defeating the three-time defending champions, Most Wanted, has been instrumental in turning the idea of a league into a reality. His passion for the sport and commitment to the local slow-pitch community have sparked a new chapter for Puerto Rican softball.

“Puerto Rico has always had an incredible spirit and love for the game,” said ISPS Commissioner Manuel T. Ferrero III. “The Boricua Open Championships were a huge success, and it became clear that the time was right to establish a formal league here on the island. We have a lineup of eight dedicated teams to start, and we expect this to be just the beginning of something truly special for Puerto Rican slow-pitch.”

The new league will feature eight teams, each bringing their unique strengths and competitive spirit to the field. Commissioner Ferrero extended his gratitude to all the team managers who have supported this project, recognizing that their hard work and leadership have been pivotal in making the league a reality.

“Special thanks go out to Kelvin Diaz, who not only led his team, Milwaukee, to a thrilling victory in the Boricua Open but also planted the seeds for this league,” Ferrero continued. “It’s leaders like Kelvin who truly make a difference in our community. His dedication to the game and his vision for Puerto Rican slow-pitch has brought us to this moment. We’re excited to watch this league grow and flourish under the ISPS umbrella.”

The Boricua Open, held just a few weeks ago, was an electrifying event where Team Milwaukee triumphed over Most Wanted, breaking their three-year championship streak. This championship win not only marked a new era in the Boricua Open but also set the stage for the ISPS Puerto Rico Men’s Slow Pitch Softball League. Diaz’s inspiring leadership on and off the field has motivated other team managers and players to come together and support the new league.

Kelvin Diaz shared his thoughts on the new league, saying, “This is a dream come true for so many of us. We have a passionate softball community here, and to have an official league backed by ISPS is incredible. Winning the Boricua Open was a huge accomplishment for Team Milwaukee, but being part of something this big for the island is what really matters. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for Puerto Rican slow-pitch.”

The league is expected to showcase high-caliber competition, bringing together seasoned players and emerging talents from across Puerto Rico. With the backing of ISPS and the support of local softball enthusiasts, the ISPS Puerto Rico Men’s Slow Pitch Softball League aims to set a new standard for the sport on the island.
